A spike is measured against your own normal, not a round number somebody picked. Fourteen mentions an hour matters when three is your average and means nothing when three hundred is.

Per keyword and per subreddit, across the hours of the day and the days of the week, because Tuesday morning and Saturday night are not the same volume.

Deviation triggers, not counts
The rule fires on distance from your normal. That is why it works for a brand with four mentions a week and one with four hundred.

Negative-sentiment spikes
Volume can be flat while the tone falls off a cliff. That is its own rule.

First mention in a big subreddit
The first time you appear in a high-authority community is worth knowing about on its own.

Quiet hours
A spike at 03:00 can wait until 08:00, and you decide which ones cannot.

A floor on relevance
Low-relevance matches are excluded from the spike window, so a common word does not manufacture an emergency.
What a multi-channel tool cannot do here
On Reddit the window between "a comment with nine upvotes" and "the top comment on the front page of the subreddit" is a couple of hours. A daily digest is a post-mortem. Detection has to run against the same cadence as the ingestion, which is why the check frequency and the spike rule share a plan entitlement.
What this does not do
- Spike detection needs a baseline. On a brand-new keyword the first few days are quiet by design rather than broken.
- We alert on your keywords. We do not and will not monitor protests, unions, activist groups or political movements — that is prohibited under Reddit's policies and refused by the keyword validator.
- Alert delivery requires a confirmed email address. Until you confirm it, alerts stay paused.

- What counts as a spike?
- A statistically significant deviation from your own rolling baseline for that keyword and subreddit, not a fixed count. You can raise or lower the sensitivity per rule.
- Will I get woken up?
- Only if you ask to be. Quiet hours are per rule, and everything suppressed lands in the next digest rather than disappearing.
- Can I get a spike alert for a competitor?
- Yes. Competitor keywords use the same detection path as your own.
- How fast is the alert?
- It follows your check frequency: the alert cannot precede the check that found the mention. The cadence per tier is on the pricing page.
